THE LILAC ZONE (Now being updated again!)
2024 was a tough year. Due to a mild winter, the bloom season was somewhat of a disappointment as the lilacs did not really get the chill that they needed. Overall, the size and abundance of blooms were not that great and only three lilacs bloomed for the first time this year.
'Sister Justina' is a hyacinthiflora and was offered at a discounted price during one of the conventions held by the International Lilac Society. It is generally thought to be one of the better white hyacinthiflora in existence due to the shrub shape, the quality of the florets and preponderance of blooms!
'Marie Finon' produces beautiful large white florets. The florets are somewhat cucullate and each petal tends to have a slight ridge running down the middle. This gives them a beautiful texture that you don't always see in lilac florets.
This lilac is a Syringa pubescens called 'Foxey Lady' that was introduced by a propagator friend of mine. It is a beautiful lilac that produces an abundance of blooms throughout the season. My friend surprised me with this gift by personally flying it to the local airport and meeting me there for its delivery. I can't say that I have ever experienced anything like that before. Needless to say, it made me feel very special and this shrub holds a special place in my heart because of it!
