THE LILAC ZONE

'Znamya Lenina' translated as "Banner of Lenin"

There have been several people that have contributed to the development of lilacs in Russia, the most notable being a gentleman by the name of Leonid Kolesnikov. His lilacs are not that common in the United States and unfortunately I have only been able to see less than a dozen of his actual cultivars. What I have seen are beautiful.  There is no doubt that if I had more space, I would definitely have more of them in my collection.

The lilacs below represent only a small portion of his work, as Kolesnikov propagated over 50 varieties. The ones that I have posted on this site are either a favorite of mine* or of one of my fellow lilac friends that has been lucky enough to have it in his/her collection.

'Pamyat' o Kolesnikove'

'Krasavitsa Moskvy' translated as "Beauty of Moscow"

'Nadezhda' translated as "Hope"

'Sumerki' translated as "Twilight"

'Nevesta'

'Mechta' translated as "Dream"

'Gastello'

*Since posting these photos, a group of lilac experts  in Russia (one of which I am proud to consider a friend) has introduced over a 100 new varieties, including some that have really caught my eye. See my "Wishlist" section for photos of some of these beauties!
